If you have a carb avoid tall gear ratios and look for 3.36 and deeper so you do not end up with a car that can only use over drive and lock up at 75 mph LOL..
I know the 82 had a 700 and a 2.87 but most importantly it had fuel injection and that was the key to that combo. Even though it was not ideal had they put a carb on it the car would have never been able to utilize that over drive and lock up. It would have stumbled kicked and bucked like ya had egg shaped tires lol
That's good advice and something to keep in mind regarding the gear change. OTOH, anyone who is stuck with the taller gears but wants to use a carb can simply drive with the shifter in "D." That locks out overdrive and solves the problem of lugging the motor in top gear. Without OD, the 2.87 gears will cruise at 75 mph at roughly 2,600 RPM. That's perfect for carbs and still more efficient than early C3s.
It would be around 1870 in od at 75 with a 2.87 and a 255/60/15. Add lock up and it is on the edge of struggling to maintain itself in traffic . I know people see newer cars maintain a lot lower then 1870 with over drive and lock up but the fuel injection makes that possible .
What I said: "Without OD, the 2.87 gears will cruise at 75 mph at roughly 2,600 RPM."
FWIW, I frequently drive like this because we have quite a few in-town roads with limits of 45-55 mph. Even with TBIs, my '82 has virtually no power or maneuverability at those speeds when the OD kicks in. If I knew an easy way to program the 700R4 to keep the OD locked out at speeds below 65 mph, I'd do it. In fact, I think that would be OK even with a change to 3.55 or 3.70 gears. Those were common ratios back in the day without OD transmissions.
