Default Engine noise

As the engine is warming up and after the carb kicks down to idle I've been hearing a rattling noise as if it's a lifter ( my take on it ) however this weekend I had the heater on while warming up and the rattling never happened . ( ran the car Sat and Sun ) any ideas? Oh and the noise only last a second or two . And never once the engine is hot .

I think BLUE nailed it. My PCV rattles sometimes when engine is cold. Mine is located on pass side valve cover with hose connected below carb.

have you opened the hood while the noise is occurring and attempted to determine the source. You can use a short piece of rubber hose as a stethoscope and move it around to locate the source.

The PCV valve looks like a plug sticking out of the valve cover. It should have a large vacuum hose on it that goes to the carburetor base.

The PVC valve is the forward plug / fitting on the valve cover, 2 types . The first picture is what was on the motor before the rebuild - not correct, the second is the correct one. The line usually has a T in it. Carb to PVC and then to Vac Tank.

Ok, here goes years of work as a service writer:

Lifters go 'tickticktickticktick', and usually sound like they are coming from the rear of the engine.

PCV valves go 'flrrrr ppppp ppppp pppp pppp' and sound like they come from the carb area.

Spun bearings sound violent as hell, like a man with a jackhammer trying to get out.

Exhaust leaks ALMOST sound like lifer knocks, but have just a little less 'TING' to the tick tick tick....

Is this making any sense?

Have had hood open and closed with the same sound .... I'm gonna replace the pvc just to see if that's it ..... Problem is the sound only last a second or two , no time to get the rubber hose like you said .. But thanks a million for the help ....
