Default Moving dist for better tach connection

the bend in the tach cable is extreme in its standard position. I want to move the distributor one position for easier cable hook up. I don't believe the engine cares as long as the wires are in the right place.
Can I just set it at TDC, pick the distributor up move it one position and then move all the wires one tower over?

Sounds to me like you've already figured out what to do. They also sell these

go for the 90 degree adapter. Works perfectly and you don't need to change anything else.

You have independently come to the same conclusion as GM did. They released a service bulletin describing this exact procedure. Here's the photo - not mine, and not sure who took it originally.

*edit: Took down the photo since Paul 74 beat me to it.

Don't use the 90-degree adapter. It puts additional torque load on the crossgear, which will cause the gear to dig itself into the thrust wall of the distributor housing, seize up, and strip out. This will cause several hundred dollars in damage due to the machine work needed to save the housing after the adapter has been used. I've had to repair over a hundred of these, so I've seen the consequences... Just rotate the distributor per the GM Service Bulletin - it solves the problem.

Thanks for the diagram. I have one of the adapters and it caused issues in the past. Seems easier to just move the distributor.

Thanks again.

Is my sequencing right on how to move it? Does it really matter to bring it to TDC or can you do it from wherever the distributor happens to be? Is a move a move regardless of where you start? Also, do you need to move the oil pump fitting with a screwdriver or will it just align on its own?

You never remove the distributor. You just loosen it, rotate it 45 degrees, and move all the plug wires over 1 tower. You'll then need to recheck your timing, of course.

I always look at your pictures and think to myself "Oh, that's how mine is supposed to look."
