Hello all,I have what might sound like a dumb question, but can anyone tell me how long a 1976 steering is?I need to buy one,but being disabled I just can't get around good enough to measure it,
Thank-you,
Bobby
Bobby, just do a search on this Forum for Jim Shea and you will get a plethora of threads that he has contributed to. He is definitely the steering column guru here and has written numerous papers on all facets, from R&R'ing to refurbishing these columns.
While you shouldn't really need to know the length of your column, just be sure it is for a C3 Corvette and matches the one you have as far as function (T&T or non-T&T). You can also PM Jim Shea directly and he will likely have the number you're looking for.
If you can't find his papers, just PM me your email address and I'll send you the ones I have downloaded. Great reference material and I've used all of them many times.
All 1969 through 1982 Corvette steering columns are pretty much interchangeable. If you can find one of these T&T steering columns with the steering wheel, all the steering wheel hardware, tilt lever, turn signal lever, horn parts, etc it should "plug right in."
There is just a slight amount of modification that has to be completed on a 1978 though 1982 T&T column to install it in your 1976 Vette. Here is a link to a paper on that installation. http://jimshea.corvettefaq.com/?p=894
Corvette steering columns are pretty unique. You cannot purchase a steering column from any other vehicle and make it fit without extensive modifications to the dash structure of your car.
Thanks Jim for your continued support of our hobby. Your papers have saved me and a bunch of friends an awful lot of time and aggravation over the years!

Gusto,
I know that I am somewhat out of step with modern Vette owners. People are expecting videos showing a step by step process, not the written word. Well, I am too old to start a new line of instructions. I'm just going to leave the "how to" videos to the younger crowd.
