Heat shield

On the transmission cross member of my '71 LS5 there are 4 tapped holes on the upper surface (two per side). The two hole on the passenger side are holding what looks to be remnants of a piece of sheet metal. Does anyone know what this is called? Should there be another one on the driver side?

Can you post a few pictures of what you are looking at? I believe most are having difficulty visualizing what you are referring to.
