If you do Proper mantiance you should never have a problem with the optima battery ... One guy has had one for 20 years ... You tube optima
Unfortunately, many of us have not had this much luck with the Red Tops. One of the red Tops That I had fail also lunched my MSD box.
Never had a issue again since I replaced them with a Odyssey Battery.
I had 2 Optima Red Tops and they both gave up the ghost early on.
I the purchased a Odyssey Battery and it's been flawless now for years. Well worth every Penney IMO. http://www.odysseybattery.com
It's new battery time for me, too, this year. Which Odyssey size did you choose?.......

Shop around for price, it's worth the extra bucks!
if you drive it daily the optima will be fine, but if it sits for any real length of time.... more than 14 days or so... and the battery will die and die and die! I won't use them anymore.
EXACTLY!! I had a red top in a daily driver and it would drop dead on a 30 degree morning.
The Odyssey batteries last an average of 7 years, and in most cases longer.

Thanks! I have top post terminals, so I'll get the top post version. I've had good luck generally with all my previous batteries, but since I don't drive in winter weather and the car sits for long periods of time, no battery really gives me the years I get from my daily driver batts. I'm hoping the Odyssey can stand the test of "time".
Ken, Your Vette is a 1969 model yes? it calls for a side post battery. Some one must have thrown a top post battery in your car.
In any case here's the one you will need with top posts.:

Mine is now over 5 years old and sits for months on end and fires right up every time. (11:1CR) You will see and feel difference. http://www.batterymart.com/p-ody-75-86-pc1230.html

Paul, I have the Braille 3121 21 lb. battery in my car now. It has given me good service for the last 4 years, but now discharges very quickly and doesn't hold voltage over a day if sitting. I originally bought it solely for weight savings, but sitting over 4 winters has taken it's toll. Hope yours lasts longer!

Good deal. BTW, '69s did come with top post batts. Early 1969.

I have high compression motors in my street rods and muscle cars that sit for long periods of time between driving. The Odyssey batteries always have plenty of power to crank 'em up. The Odyssey in my '34 Ford has been in service for over 8 years and has never failed to start the car ... even after as much as 4 months of non-use. Great batteries!
You will like it

I had the same problem you state with a 100$ Walmart battery as well...
A lead acid battery, an some other types as well, do very very bad in holding up if they are drained often or left in a state of discharge... This will kill a brand new battery in 6 months or less...
Since I only drive her a few times a month, I always put on a battery keeper/charger when not driving the car
Remember... Non use as long as NO drain you are fine... So many thing drain though... Like new car stereos alarms Bluetooth stuff.. A lot of this runs 24/7 on your car... Draining your battery

I've always used a charger in colder months of non driving (the good kind, for charging AGM batts. without overcharging), but it seems time has ran out for this battery. In contrast, the battery in my previous GTA TransAm lasted 12 years under similar care......it was still good when I decided to replace it. I just was afraid to chance another winter.

There are newer smart chargers that can bring back bad batteries (not just Optima) that have an anti-sulfation cycle which happens over time. This can restore the plates so it can accept a charge again. It will not help if a cell is bad or other damage.
Please give me all your "dead" Optima batteries, thanks.....
Okay, I'll tell you how to restore them. Always pick up dead ones from people that don't know on the cheap. You need a trickle charger one around 1 amp or less. Put it on a trickle charger for 24 hours or so, and then get a regular AGM battery charger and use the 10 or 15 amp setting and get it back over 14V. Once there use a 2 amp charge to top off.
If you let an Optima battery get discharged below 10V it won't recognize most any charger, but a trickle charger will get it back above 10V so most chargers will work fine.
Old cars tend to have battery drains (shorts). These will drain any battery including your Optima. One way to battle that is to leave it on a battery tender.
Delco makes a nice AGM battery too. I have one in my son's car.
AGM batteries are the way to go. Optimas get a bad rep because once drained no one knows how to bring them back to life. They were the first large maker of AGM batteries.
If AGM batteries had been invented 50 years ago, the classis car hobby would have more restorable cars today.
AGM can have motor heat issues and that is what makes it perfect for our remote battery Vettes. The ability of AGM to deep cycle. Lower weight and being a sealed like jell cell. The shock resistance. They are are just a win win battery.
My polaris quad boiled away my original one year old battery so I switched to AGM and it has been good to go ever since
