When I purchased the car one of the previous owners had aspirations of racing it. So they removed most of the critical parts of the AC system. The vents and ducting are in the vehicle as well as the dash control. No Compressor, hoses, condenser, accumulator etc.
Now my question is, is it better to go to an after market "vintage" style system or should I just start sourcing what's missing and replacing?
I am not concerned with factory restoration.
I'm in the same boat with my 72. I've decided to use a Vintage Air kit. It uses R134 refrigerant, modern compressor (lighter more efficient), and has electric servos instead of cables. It also has faster, more efficient blower fan. I started pricing all the stock parts I'm missing and easily surpassed price of VA kit.

I don't think Vintage offers a kit for our 81s. I put in a kit from Classic Auto Air. I am very satisfied with the kit and their service. The kit uses the Denso compressor and heavy duty brackets for mounting. Just have to measure the hoses and have someone crimp one end of them.
