Tach problem
Hey guys ,
Just finished some work under the car (76 auto), now
my tach is reading 5500 at idle. The only electrical thing I did was remove and disconnect the starter. Would the starter wiring have any effect on the tach?
thanks, - Jay

Doubtful...I am sure that you have an HEI distributor where the TACH wire plugs into the underside of the distributor cap.
More than likely the tach board in the tach went bad.....and was not related to what you did....but I am not there and do not know how things are wired up either.
What is it reading when the ignition key is ON and the engine is NOT running?????
Does the tach needle move at all when it is running????
You can disconnect the TACH wire at the distributor and turn ON the ignition key and see what the needle in the TACH does also.
