I changed the fluid in the differential of my 74 coupe. I got the grape fluid because the guy said it was for high performance applications, while the lemon was for standard duty. Is this correct?
The man that builds differentials for me recommends the GM lubricant and additive specifically and exclusively.
Differential gears do not know the brand of oil you are using. If an oil falls within manufacturers specifications, then it will work. I have no doubt your diff dude has had good luck with what he is using, but I also have no doubt he hasn't run his own laboratory studies comparing different types of lubricants.

Reason: misspelling
I didn't really smell like grape to me, but the old fluid definitely smelled like sh*t. How did they decide on grape anyway? Seems more appropriate for it to smell like Hot Dogs and Apple Pie. Wasn't that the jingle? Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie and Chevrolet?
I know it's important to get the right differential fluid. But I gotta say---I have really got a good laff from this thread. Still---Mom always powdered mine.--- still works!----boB
