I hope I don't show my automotive ignorance again, but if I replace the power steering control valve and steering cylinder on my '81 will I have to get a wheel alignment done after or will I be good?
YES...making sure the control valve is balanced is a MUST....BUT
I also visually check on how far the OLD control valve has been threaded on the center link and the possible GAP between it and the stop shoulder.
SO when I go back in with the control valve...I make sure I thread it on all the way...and it is possible that when you get it on all the way....that the control is NOT pointing as it should and you may have to back it off to get it to allow you to install the bolt and tighten it. SO...TAKE a very look look and its POSITION BEFORE you go and un-thread it...because when the bolt that locks it in place....when installed...can still allow the control valve to rotate....so pay attention to this.

Just a side note, I rebuilt my leaking control valve last week and got it out for a test drive yesterday. The 'wandering' was not nearly as bad as it was before. I did note that when I took off the valve, the ball stud was easy to move. On rebuild, using the same stud, the stud was difficult to move which is the way its supposed to be. It took some slop out of the linkage. For those with wandering steering or other issues, you may want to check this part of the steering linkage for looseness.
