Default Please help decode tire year made

I am bring a 1979 Bubba car back to life. The tires 'look' great, but I feel they may be way to old for safety. When were these tires made ? What is the 98S following tire size ?

Here is the Info on the side walls;
Road Hugger Radial G/T
235/60R/15 98S
DOT PJVE DXKR 435

Thank You

Correct!

98S is the load and speed rating...higher the number, 101 is better than 98, the more weight the tire can handle

S is the speed rating...112MPH which is the lowest rating for any tire on US roads...basically crap

T=118 MPH
U-124 MPH
H-130 MPH
V-up to 149 MPH
Z-Open rating above 149 MPH, will have a sub rating of W-168 MPH, Y-186 MPH

None of my several cars has a speed rated tire other than Z, primarily for tire strength and safety....

Also look for Traction/Temperature on sidewall

AA best A very good B good C run away

Unfortunately, the 3 number code (instead of a 4 number code) shows that they were made before 2000. It's way past time for replacement no matter how much tread is left on the tires. I wouldn't drive on them unless it's to a nearby tire store to replace them.

Tires made in the 21 century will read as follows:

Eg 2601 26th week of 2001

3208-32nd week of 2008

Thanks for the replies. These tires will 'never' see the road. New tires on the vette before she rolls out.

Just a brief "recap". 435 is the 43rd week of either 85 or 95.

Glad to hear it. Not worth the risk at all. Good luck with your project!

Not always and on new vehicles tires are not always mounted with the date code facing out. That's not a challenge. That's speaking from experience. I process a lot of road hazard tire claims.

I just bought a new set of Cooper Cobra GT's and the date code is only embossed on the white letter side.

I've actually never seen it on both sides. Not saying no one makes tires with the date code on both sides, just that it's not been the case on any tires I've had.

Good decision. I bought one last summer that had good looking tires and drove it some --------until the car developed a bad tire vibration. The tires were made in 1992 and were coming apart. Could have been bad news.
