Default 1970 spare tire

I am trying to install my spare tire after 14 years.I have the stock ralley rim with a 215/70/15 Tire. This tire is suppose to be the replacement for the F70.I have 225/70/15 on the car.I bought this tire for the spare so I would not have a problem putting it in the carrier. The tire binds up at the front side (front of Car) when you try to raise it up. The rear bolts have a shoulder on it that I have tightened to the frame. Is this correct or are the front bolts supposed to be adjusted down. There seems like a lot of tread up in the frame.

The front carrier bolts, are the same for all 68-79 Corvettes, even though the 73's and later, came with GR70x15's (same size as today's P225/70R15). The tubs are the same also, except 75 and later ones are made out of SMC, instead of fiberglass. The only thing that changed, was the lock bolts. 68-74 use a bolt about 8" long, while 75-77 have an 8 3/8" bolt and 78 up use an 8 5/8" bolt.

You should be able to carry a 215/70 with no issues. I don't see any reason why you can't back the front bolts off some, but if you still need some more room, you could order one of the later longer lock bolts.

The P215/70R15 you have, is the same diameter as the original F70x15, but the F70 was a bias ply tire, while the P-Metric is a radial. Even though the diameter is the same, radials of a similar size, are wider, especially in the sidewall.

Default Spare Tire

I found the spare tire mount in my assembly Manuel. It shows a nut and a lock washer on the thread. So the forward bolts have to be adjusted and locked down with the nut. Answered my own question.

Thanks for the reply. I found the setup in the assembly manual. It uses a lock nut on the thread. I removed the front hanger bolts and put the lock nuts on. The tire went right in. One question I have is the adjustment. The rear carrier release bolt has a shoulder on it. Should this be tightened to the frame.? Right now I am about 1/4" from it bottoming out. I do not want to tightened it any more. The tire is tight in the container.

you want the tire tight, the bolt doesn't have to go past the point of obvious resistance to turning. Are you sure you installed the correct length lock nut on the front bolts?

Hi Chuck,
Here's the typical installation for the rear bolt.
I set the length so there's JUST enough extra length so the strap/tub can be lifted slightly so the bolt can be slipped out of the strap.
It's the barrel turning on the lock bolt that sets the length.
