Also have a 78SA, installed Hooker 2134-3HKR and as others' mentioned easy install. I actually ordered the AC bracket, but did not need it. I really like the sound with the headers and dual exhaust.

Actually the pipes are only 2 1/4". I have a low to mid rpm motor so they work fine for my purpose. Purchased the matching Hooker mufflers also. No drone and it sounds good. A little quiet though. I bought the kit through Summit at about $175 roughly. Mufflers were extra.

No additional heat; although I did put insulation when I changed the carpet and the headers are ceramic coated. No pingy sound.

Did anyone that already did a header install have problems getting the old manifolds off? Are there tricks to getting the old bolts out without braking or snapping them off? I have been thinking about doing a header install on my 81 and these are some of my concerns.

With the motor slighly warm spraying them down with penetrating oil for a day or so may minimize risk. Cant remember the fav brand damn old age

When you put cams in with overlap, more compression you can get a slight pinging, a thicker gauge tube helps some
Those are good noises though!

Are you changing the interior over to oyster and red? Think I have some oyster sun visors.

I've had my Hooker Super Comp headers out a few times on my 79. Not that hard as I recall. both went in from underneath. I think I only removed the forward spark plugs, definitely the oil dipstick and as KapSa said use a spacer btwn the header flange and the A/C bracket. I did not however go from manifolds to headers, my car came with the headers when I bought it.

I just put Summit Racing Headers on my '78. They fit in so clean, I thought I did something wrong. It came with every thing. Only thing is, the reducers are 2 1/4. The muffler shop made new 2 1/2 reducers then ran 2 1/2 pipe to 40 series flowmasters. I have Borg steering and the headers clear the box by a good inch or more.

Hey 78silver,did you use OEM intermediate pipes from reducer back to muffl's? Reason I ask:the factory pipes are flattened below the rr diff. I'm looking for more road clearance not less. Also, did you lose clearance at the header to reducer flange? My car sit fairly low. Thanx,Al

Silv,do your headers hang down a bit? Scrap on the ground? I'm still collecting my parts and this thought has me wondering about the low-collector. Hdal

How about changing jetting? I'm still running the OEM Quadrajet, fattened up a bit after smog equip removal. Did you guys see a gas mileage improvement? Hdal

I think probably so but after installing the vortec heads, headers, and rebuilding of my quadrajet I've been more aggressive with the accelerator pedal just to hear quadrajet howl.

Quick Reply: 78' L-82 header install.
