Default Help with rebuilding my power steering pump

I read through the threads about rebuilding my power steering pump and took mine a part. I have a few issues. My shaft seal is a little smaller than the one included in the kit. It doesn't want to go in. Also I have these additional parts I didn't see in the pictures from this rebuild article. I'm wondering if I don't have different pump. http://www.corvette-restoration.com/...mp_rebuild.htm

With the price of reman. steering pump. I could see no reason to rebuild my old one. Been clicking along for 5 years now without a problem.

That said some manufactured pumps could be DOA so when I picked it up I opened it and spun it around to feel for anything wrong.

Sorry I can't be of any help but I am sure others will chime in.

Yeah it's looking like I should have just bought a rebuilt. Hopefully someone can help.

The series of photos on rebuilding the Saginaw big, P-style pump look accurate. I think that you have the wrong rebuild kit. The Saginaw P-pump has been around for years and years. The one major design change occured in 1975 when the driveshaft changed to a interference fit pulley design.

The two parts on the right are an internal filter and filter retainer. This is usually discarded by pump rebuilding facilities. I recently ran across one of these and I cleaned it and reused it. RE: Seal- obviously, your kit does not match your pump.

How do I get the proper rebuild kit? What car did this probably come off of?

The pump came in at least 2 variations that I am aware of.

Shaft size - .750. .688 (or .687)

The OEM small seal for the .688 shaft is #5688020
This seal has a OD of 1.254 to press into a 1.250 housing.

I believe this crosses to a SKF #6765, National 8773S.

I can't tell you which kit will have this seal, but I know the Edelman #7910 kit is wrong because it has the larger seal for the later shaft .750. (ACDELCO #36348720 GM #19146402 which is 1.315 OD, shaft OD=.750)

My 66 has the small shaft.
My 70 has the large shaft.

Edit: The ACDelco kit #1914654 also has the larger incorrect seal.

check Wilcox for the right kit, the one he lists is reasonable, and I bet he will be able to measure the seal for you to verify...

I'm in the middle of rebuilding the power steering pump on my '71 350/270.

I also have the filter/element & the filter retainer. Are you suggesting I should discard these when doing my rebuild?

Just curious, what purpose do they serve?

Thanks
