Default L71 Heads

Hi There,
I am in the middle of piecing my 1969 427 convertible back together. Today was time to find out why I have no water temperature. I found the wire but can not find where the temperature sensor would go as I thought it was into the cylindar head. Anyway, I pulled the valve cover to discover I have 3856208 heads from 1965, not 3919840 heads which I think should be on the car. Anyway, I can't see any place to connect the temperature sensor on these heads. Any ideas?? Someone said the 65 and 66 cars took water temperature from the intake manifold but my 69 tripower setup has nothing that I can see that would accept a water temperature sensor.
Can someone tell me if what I am saying makes any sense and furthermore if they have any ideas for me to get water temperature short of changing heads?? (anyone want to trade some heads)
The car is now up and running but driving it with no water temp scares me.
Please talk slow, I am new and feel as though I am drinking from a firehose as I restore this vette.

Those heads are from the infamous Z-16 L37 375hp & 425hp 396!! Someone is looking for those heads- It's too bad you are so far away from me...I'd keep those heads and buy another set- for safe keeping. But that's me..........

I have the same problem with my 427. It has the older heads without the temp sensor. I was thinking I would get a thermostat housing from something newer with the fittings for the emissions vacuum switch on it. I don't know if it`ll work but give it a try and let me know! lol

Vancouver

Starting with the 1968 the model year the temperature sensor was located on the heads for BB cars. In 65-67 it was located on the intake manifold. The later 3919840 heads had a boss on the side of the head that was drilled and threaded to take the temperature sensor. Your 3856208 1965 heads won't have that boss. You'll either need to jury rig something up to add the temperature sensor or switch heads.

Have a 68 L-71 with 67 heads, used a thermostat housing for a later emissions engine and mounted the temp sensor there. Works fine there.

Hey 1Ford
Is there any way you could snap a picture of your thermostat housing or let me know what thermostat housing you used (or where you can get one). Until I replace the heads with correct ones, I would like to get something rigged up.
Would any newer bbc thermostat housing have the emission fitting in it?

Thanks, Pete

Hey Gofast,

I have a 1969 built in December 1968. I just put up a tread on parts for sale that lists what I have and what I need.

Thanks Bob,
I think those are oval port heads and wouldn't match up to my rectangular port intake manifold.
Much appreciated none the less and perhaps someone else may be interested.
Cheers!

I went on ebay and found a t-stat housing for one of the later engines with emission controls that was the same thread size as the stock temp sender.

Looks like you joined the forum to ask about those heads. Send a private message to that person. If he is not on here regularly, he won't know you are asking. A PM goes straight to his email.

Sorry Mark,
I traded those heads to another forum member about a year ago.
Best regards,
Pete

there is a guy on ebay with 4 sets of 215's. 580 plus 150 shipping is a little steep.
