Default Brake caliper rebuild question

Im rebuilding my calipers and the lip seal must have deteriorated in the bore. I have a black ring that I need to get out. Can I use some 600 grit sand paper to clean up the bores?

I am not sure I understand your question. Is the black ring a stain or is it a physical lump of black rubber from the seal? If it is from the seal I would use a knife to scrap the excess. And hone the surface smooth.

I would say more of a stain. What would you hone it with?

Have you tried a solvent like lacquer thinner? If that doesn't work, I'd try something like chrome polish before I would go to a sandpaper.

Good luck... GUSTO

I would try the lacquer thinner. If that does not work I would leave it alone.

FYI. This is what a brake cyclinder hone looks like.

If you are referring to a rubber seal that is stuck to the bores of the caliper, I have used paint remover. It works effectively and quickly. I follow up with a good clean with soap and water and air dry with compressed air. I next use denatured alcohol with pipe cleaners to clean the passages. Lastly, I dry using compressed air. I assemble using clean Dot 3/4 brake fluid. Good luck. Jerry

Your ring could be where moisture leaked past the seal over the years. A brake hone will clean it up.

I thought I had read not use a brake hone on SS sleeved calipers. I did see a video that mentioned 600 grit emery cloth. I have a brake hone so that is an option.

I would try something like a 3M scotchbrite pad lubricated in a solvent tank before emery cloth

I used a scotchbrite non-scratch pad and brake fluid to polish my
stainless steel sleeved calipers when I rebuilt them.
