Woke up this morning to a strong smell of fuel coming from the garage, opened the door of the garage to see a big pool of fuel under the vette. A quick investigation revealed that the fuel pump was leaking somehow from its body. I crimped the incoming line to block the flow and sprayed degreaser into the fuel so I could wash it away, whew potential disaster averted! Now to my question, is it common for a fuel pump to leak from its body? It is definitely not the fuel lines, I have never touched the pump on this engine (Gen 1 small block), I understand there is some trick to stopping the the pump rod falling out when you remove the pump?
There's also often a bolt hole in the front of the block that will accept a bolt to hold up the pump rod.
Chances are the diaphragm on the inside of the pump is shot. Ordinarily, they are not rebuildable. They're also reasonably cheap. Good idea to replace the molded rubber hoses while you're there, as Peterbuilt says above.
Don't forget to "CHANGE THE OIL" as there is a good chance gasoline from the leaking fuel pump also made it's way into the crankcase. Diluted oil caused by gasoline in the oil could cause main &/or rod bearing failure ?
The oil is okay, the AC pump fitted had two little holes in it that allowed the fuel to escape when the diaphragm failed instead of going into the sump:-)
