Default 1971 How Hard to Replace Front Crossmember?

1971 coupe with air conditioning the front crossmember under the radiator is rusted out. Is this a simple bolt in part? Does the radiator need to be removed to do the job?

Yes, that's just the radiator support, not a crossmember. Radiator must come out. It has three bolts on each side thru the inner fenders.

Hi C ED,
In addition to the 3 bolts on each side each, there are 2 bolts at the bottom that go into the front crossmember.
It's likely the fan and fan shroud will need to be removed too before the radiator and core support can be lifted out.
Regards,
Alan

If this is the crossmember you need to replace it's not all that bad. But if you are talking about the bottom of the core support then it can be a hassle but very do-able.

Hi Ed,
The front cross member is attached to the forward frame extensions…. 2 bolts at each end.
In addition, the large center bumper bracket is bolted to the crossmember using 4 bolts.
Next, there are 2 bolts from the core support that mount to the crossmember too. They come up from the bottom, the 2 round holes in the crossmember are for access to those bolts.
While under there, remove the bolts and brackets for the 2 bumper-ettes.
The front clip really needs to be SUPPORTED WELL when the crossmember is removed.
It'll be a bit of work to do well.
Regards,
Alan

The center bumper brace 4 bolts (2 from above and 2 from below) and 1 of the 2 core support to crossmember bolts.

Frame extension.

Frame extension to front crossmember bolts.

Bracket for bumper-ettes. You can also see one go the round holes for the core-support bolts.
