Not long after getting the vacuum system leak-free, the (original?) EGR valve gave up the ghost.
To my surprise there is no OEM or OEM substitute part available.
My state does not require emission checks for vehicles of this age.
I have had VERY bad experience with aftermarket vacuum operated parts: The vacuum section of a needed headlight switch replacement fell apart--luckily I was able to repair but who knows how long it will work Of five (count them) headlight actuators three had terrible leaks upon receipt, one developed a leak after a very few operations and only one is still leak free (I found NOS OEM replacement for the other one). The "modified to work properly" HVAC control arrived with a significant leak--some silicon grease fixed my original. Only a remanufactured cruise control transducer both arrived leak free and stays leak free and functioning.
Any experience with aftermarket EGR valves? Are they the typical Chinese garbage?
I'm considerate about things like emission controls but should I just forget about replacing the valve?
I bought one from one of the corvette parts vendors. There are four different ones for the 79, depending on the emissions package. You just compare your part number to the ones they have available. I'm not sure the box stores carry four different kinds, but I'm sure they will sell you one. I ran mine for four years and never had a problem with it.
Regardless of where you get it, you will need two gaskets because you have to keep the spacer. I tried running the EGR without the spacer, and I couldn't get a good seal on the manifold because the mount studs are not threaded far enough down. Hope that helps.
Years ago I tried to keep all the emissions crap on my '79 to no avail. I couldn't get rid of the vacuum leaks. The EGR was the worst offender I finally gave up and pulled it all off. It was the only way I could get the engine to run right.
