Default Brake problem with an 82 sting ray

So I bought a 1982 corvette collectors edition sting ray from my girlfriends grandpa.
She's my dream car and got her cheap as hell.

she runs and drives,
But the brakes are stopping me from driving her and I can't tell exactl what's wrong with them.
I was told that it was a leak in one of the cylinders.

Basically there's no tension in the brakes, they're very soft and don't brake the car unless i push them all the way and then it still barely brakes the car.

The e-brake is a completely different story. I can drive the car with the e-brake up.
When pulling back the e-brake its got some tension still but still doesn't stop the car remotely.

So what exactly is my problem?
Is it the brake pads or leaky cylinder?
How much would it cost to repair this? I can give more details of needed.

Thanks in advance!

Where should I start with this one....Pull the wheels off and look for wet brake fluid on the tires and the brakes that will tell you it they are leaking provided there is fluid in the master it may be dry and go from there

E-brakes do very little on these cars when when new.

can you see any leaks?the calibers ,the hoses, the master cylinder.if no leakes and the brakes don't pump up I would check the mc? .still no brakes look at the hoses under pressure and see iff they are bulging .then check the caliber and see if the are moving in and out okay.are you wanting to learn how to work on this car or just drive it.lots of shops can fix it for you,if you are good at writing checks.

take it to a mechanic for an estimate. no way to guess what it would cost on an internet forum, and not knowing your skills/abilities/experience and what tools you own. if you've never done brake work before, don't just dive in on your own. lots of wear items, critical settings, etc. you need to know what you are doing. if you want to learn, start searching the forum and reading brake threads. then when you know what to look for, come back and ask more pointed questions.

you want to be looking for leaks, at fittings, hoses, calipers, master cylinder, etc. evaluate condition of fluid, rotors, pads, etc. you need to know the history of the vehicle, what, if any, parts have been changed from stock/replaced, even exactly what kind of fluid is in there...

It's not an emergency brake, only a parking brake. Even at that, count yourself lucky if it will keep the car from rolling forward when it's in Drive. That's just how they are.

Since it's very hard to judge voice inflection and intent on an internet forum, I'll just add this.

Congratulations on you new car. I think you'll have a blast with it.

There is a search function on this forum that you can use to gather information about most topics. I myself have had good results using it on general things, but have had mixed results on specifics on other questions. I search as much as I can, and if I cant find the answer I need, or think I need, then I post a question.

Most of my questions probably seem simplistic to anyone with a good grasp of mechanics, which unfortunately, I do not possess. So ask away, but be prepared to get flamed by some posters around here.

And again, welcome to the forum, I've learned a few things, and expect to learn a lot more, from forum members.
