Hello all, I'm a fairly new owner of a 1974 Coupe. Must say, best car I've ever driven, but I'm having issues with the ignition system, it idles rough in drive (stock 3-spd auto) at stop lights. I'm looking for some suggestions on what I can do, I've tweaked the Holley 4150 carb and it got better (not stalling out), but it still idles rough. Some other symptoms: I can stall it if I jump on the gas hard from a dead stop, and it backfires under heavy acceleration from 15-25 mph, I am guessing these items are related, but not totally sure. I'm not looking to be a street racer here, but I do want to bring up the overall performance.
I am still learning the tricks about being a home mechanic - never had the kind of car I could work on myself - so this is new to me. I've seen several helpful suggestions in this forum, so I am hoping I can manage to get some help. Thanks everyone!!
well welcome to the forum and good luck with the 74..as far as upgrading to electronic igniton,i bought the msd tach drive dist. and msd6a box and it really helped in starting idled better and more response, plus it has a tach drive for the factory tach.
Holly's can give a lot of trouble, blown power valves, vacuum leaks, accelerator pump timing, ect. backfiring for whatever reason can blow the power valve. However, I'd make sure the ignition system is okay check the cap and rotor, make sure the condensor mounting screw is tight and the points dwell at 30 degrees. I have a HEI in a highly modified 406 and I installed an Auto Meter tach in front of the original mechanical tach. The car is a 1970. Mid America sells a HEI with the mechanical tach drive for $ 539.99 plus 25.99 S&H.
Hope this helps.
