Default Stock size 255/60/15 performance tires.....

It's sad to see that there are no longer any performance tires made in the stock size. I did find a Nankang NS-7 tire being made in the correct size with an H speed rating. Anyone ever tried them? I've never driven a Chinese tire.... My preferred tires have always been USA, German, French, Italian or sometimes Japanese. Even Korea seems to be making some pretty good tires these days. But the Chinese?

I know you can get Cooper and BFGs in the correct size, but that's a pretty old tech S rated tire. I don't want repro red lines or repro Goodyears. Old tires are bad compared to new tires when it comes to performance.

I know you can cruise around on M/T ET streets in the correct size. That would be great for drag racing or maybe even autocrossing, but bad if a few drops of water or coolant start hitting the pavement.

Does Avon or Dunlop make anything in Europe that I haven't found yet? Hoosier?

Thanks in advance for help and replies. At $87 a tire I'm tempted to order a few Nankangs and see if they might be worth a darn.

I feel your pain.

Have you considered the Nitto NT55R 275/50/15 drag radial?
V speed rated (149 mph). They sell for about $150 ea.

We 'struggle' here in UK for these earlier stock type sizes. Since EU regulations regarding tyre noise and emissions came in to force in Europe the only USA branded tyre here now is BFG. Cheaper alternatives generally will be either 4x4's or Chinese. Some people have stepped down a couple of sizes in width and gone up to 70 section to keep correct diameter.

I would avoid freeway driving at that price.

My experience with anything made in China has not been good. I would not be in a hurry to risk my life with Chinese tires. I have the BFG's on my '79 and I'm very happy with them. I would trust an S rated BFG long before I'd trust any Chinese tire.

This is the reason I went to 17"s... There's also Hoosier Street TDs (or something along those lines), but again, they're really track tyres rather than street tyres.

Anyone make a 17" wheel that looks like the oem 15" aluminum wheel? I have seen the 17" rallye wheel, but would love to find a 17" wheel that looks like optional aluminum wheels that came on my '80.

I gave up on finding a better tire for my 15" wheel and just replaced the 11 year old BFG tires with brand new BFGs.

I have ordered Nankang SP7 275-60-15 because they are advertised as Summer tire.

They will arrive next week.

If you can wait, I am happy to update you on the quality and performance.

Sounds good. I'd like to hear your opinion on them. My father used to be involved heavily in auto testing specifically tires. I know a tire doesn't just get an H speed rating for no reason.

If you can snap a few photos that would be great too.

A used Honda del Sol I bought in '08 had Nankangs on it. They seemed decent enough. worked pretty good in rain, too. They were 185/60-14s

A tire engineer told me once that speed rating were to a degree overplayed. That most tire would be fine at much higher speeds for shorter durations of time.

Great tires.
