My highest speeding ticket was 156 mph, but this was back in the 80's when California had 55 mph out on the open free ways because of the national speed limit. So I was 101 mph over the speed limit. I lost my license for 6 months except for to and from work. Driving school and a $1000 fine. 8:30 am with no traffic on I-15 from Las Vegas where I lived before Barsto California. In my modded 79 Vette. I had V rated tires, which were about the highest rating back then I had slowed down because of traffic and I had no idea that highway patrol had been chasing me for over 35 miles. The CHP officer said that his car would only go about 130
I set my cruise control on my SS at 125 while driving to PHX last fall. It was a nice ride. When I came up on traffic after about 10 miles, I backed it off. Nice cars.

“You get used to seeing people going 65 or 70 and what that looks like. But I've never seen anything like this. It's like a rocket on wheels at that point," Hermantown Police Department Deputy Chief Shawn Padden told the newspaper.
My gto did 172 in the Texas mile. When I tried to stop it was one of those times when I prayed the car stayed together. Definitely makes me wonder how the first person to break the sound barrier felt.
You guys are so fast and cool. I'm really glad you are all out on the road endangering everyone's lives with your cars.
You apparently have never driven in the southwestern US or the EU. I've stopped and taken a picture on a 30 mile straight line road and there was not another car on the road. That is why these freeways now have 85 mph speed limits. Another time I saw this car coming at me from way out there I was just doing the slow 120 mph cruise when this car that wasn't even close enough to identify flipped on the red and blue lights. I slowed right down and waved as he passed by. Just his way of saying to slow down a little.
The other thing is modern cars or highly modded older cars are so smooth at speed. I also drive in the EU at over 150 mph for hours on end and I'm over in the slow lane to let the bikes and supercars blow by me.
My rental in the EU last fall was the Citroen C7 Luxury ride and the turbo diesel base motor used the Puegeot lmp1 race car. the c-7 is equipped with a 300 kpm speedo and 6 speed manual!

I managed 168 years ago at an airport runway one mile drag race in my old vette. I have big Wilwood brakes and didn't think much up it, but i road race so I'm used to late braking to make a turn.

i was waiting for that. Whatever. if you spend your life in the east coast you have no idea of how open and desolate some of our western roads have to offer.http://www.silverstateclassic.com/records.aspx

Honestly...desolate or not, anything over 100 MPH is moving. That's the fastest I've had my 1970, but that is due to my concern about the car coming apart from under me. It GETS to 100 MPH in a hurry...
I had my wife's Volvo (4.4L V8 XC90) up to 140 before. I believe that's the fastest I've ever been in a vehicle. It was a quick run between exits (3 miles apart) on an oddly vacant I-95. Got onto the interstate and never lifted. Let off once I was satisfied I was going fast enough, slowed, and exited.
Felt like I was doing 80. Amazing vehicle.
Vacant or not, there are just too many variables to count when you get going that fast in a street car on street tires with a street suspension. Had a high school kid die a mile from my house a couple of weeks ago because of disrespect of speed and its effects.
The folks that do it in traffic are retarded and should be charged with murder if anything happens.
The folks that do it alone...well...I guess it's OK once or twice in your lifetime.
But 171...that's no freaking joke. Desolate or not, that's just absurd.

Blame the gov. for allowing cars that can exceed 200mph to be bought off the showroom floor. And you can blame car manufacturers too for developing cars with 1000HP.
If you bought one these do you think you would do the speed limit at all times. Lots of back roads and vacant roads late at night where you can take you car out to stretch it's legs.
The gov. tried to stop this with 85mph speedos, that right there shows you how stupid they are. Now we are into a HP war the likes of which were not even found in the late 60's to early 70's, where it going to end know one knows.
My own Corvette dream car that took me 20 years to get where it's has a paltry 600HP, you can go buy one that is faster right off the showroom floor

I had no idea until I took a driving vacation out west. My thoughts were if the car breaks down I'm dead because there is nothing around. Where I live if you don't see a gas station or store every mile something is wrong. Out there you better have at least 70 miles of fuel at all times because it might be that far before you see fuel.
We used to have an event here that they closed a public road. We used it for a charity ride. It was fun while it lasted but I was able to drive my car at 135 mph for 10 miles. There was a few that got out of hand and started video of this and put it on the Internet. Well the pressure of this finally took its toll and it is no longer. Probably a good thing as the speeds were getting out of hand.
