I have 18x9.5 5.25bs in the rear and 18x8 with 4.5bs in the front. The front sat too far inboard so I use a 1.0 bolt on hub centric spacer in the front.
can i put a 4.5 back space wheel on ? I know it calls for 4" but can use 4.5 front and back? bill
It probably has a lot to do with what tire you plan to mount on them. For example in '78 you could get either a 225/70 or a 255/60-15" tire from the factory. The 225/70 fits pretty much within the 8" of the rim, while a 255/60 actually bulges past the edge of the rim. This would seem to indicate that a 255/60, would be more of a problem than a 225/70.
I would wager a 255/60 will probably interfere with the parking brake cable mount on the side of the trailing arm. The best way to determine on your car is to mount a rim and see where the limitations are and if that clears, decide on a tire.
I have 255/60-15's on my '73, front and rear but on stock 4" backspace Corvette wheels with no clearance problems at all.
I, too, was looking at new wheels for my '72. Everything I seem to read on the forum says our stock backspacing with the rally wheels is 4". I took off a wheel yesterday and measured the backspacing and it measures 3 3/4", not 4". What gives? I have the original 15x8 rally wheels that came on my car and I've had it for 42 years now. They were never changed. Thoughts?
