Hello All,,,, I am the new owner of a 1970 Corvette. An L46 350/350, Muncie M-22, numbers matching. Mostly original. From what I hear, its a rare car. The Headers and exhaust are in need of replacing. I would like to keep it as stock looking as possible, while getting the best performance. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks. S
I will need to replace the entire exhaust which is not original to the car. To clarify, my priorities are performance over aesthetics, however I do want to have the period correct rectangular tips, but all else is secondary. I guess headers would be the way to go. I don't mind a loud system. Very few things sound as good to me as a Small Block Chevy.
Look for a quality coated header and go with a mandrel bent system with the mufflers of your choice.Stainless or aluminized is up to you and your wallet.
Coated black headers, custom mid pipes to fit the headers.
Corvette Central exhaust with Magnaflows. Added a crossover pipe.
I also had the tips cut off and replaced with 2.5" pipe to match the rest of the system.
FYI - Unless the transmission was swapped out, your car most likely has the M-21 transmission. On the passenger side, you should see some numbers stamped into the case. These numbers will be your partial VIN and transmission type/build date. The "B" indicates M-21, an "A" = M-20, a "C" = M-22.
I also have a 1970 350/350, any 2 1/2" exhaust system will work just fine. Headers will offer better flow over the OEM cast iron manifolds. The rectangular tips you mention just bolt on, so they will fit any properly sized mufflers.
I just want to remind everyone that if you want a true 2 1/2" exhaust system.....none of the premade systems for C3 Vettes have a 2 1/2 outlet.....NONE of them. All 2".
To some this is no matter.....but the above posted pic of the Magnaflow muffler is a 2" outlet...no matter what you weld on the end of it.
If one is making good to serious power....this is a cork.
You need to fit aftermarket mufflers to the system.....
Pypes is the only one I know of so far that sells the system without mufflers.
I still cannot believe the lack of support in the aftermarket for a serious system.

At least for the CC exhaust that's not true. We cut the reducer off and it's a 2.5" outlet. The shop then fabricated a new 2.5" piece and welded it on and we added a 3" Stainless Steel tip.

I looked at Maganflows system....even called them about it....
All of them for the 68-73 were 2" outlet....
Even in your pic it looks a bit small....it could be the picture and I am not doubting you my friend. Maybe Magnaflow changed it.
But I did a LOT of research on this subject and ended up buying a Pypes X-pipe from a member and am in the process of making it work with Hedman long tubes and Classic Chambers....
I wish what I wanted existed....
The Magnaflow system may be different. Corvette Central seems to be just using a generic Magnaflow muffler.
They weld on a reducer on the muffler exist that can be cut off.
I snagged this picture from there web site that shows the reducer.
The shop that modified my laughed once it was cut off because you could really see the difference with the reducer and the rust of the muffler tip in hand.

Thanks for the pic....and I now see exactly what you are talking about....
I just installed the CC 2 1/2 system and was disappointed that the tips were only 2 inch. Are replacement 2 1/2 tips available to buy or are they custom?
