I am about to pull the trigger on a overdrive 5 speed tko 600 is there any pros or cons from purchasing from one vender over the other as far as quality and customer service? And do the shifters vary that much?
I bought mine from Modern Driveline. My only beef with them is the shifter rattles and they have been no help. I've contacted them and they basically tell me I'm crazy and that their shifters don't rattle.
As for the transmission its good but not without its issues. When it was new the shifting was far from smooth. The 2-3 shift will make you crazy for the first 500 miles. I couldn't get mine to shift above 3000 rpm. After the transmission breaks in it gets better but there are a number of shops that have come up with mods to improve the shifting.
Bought mine from Hurst Drivelines. They do the tailshift housing mod to fit the tunnel and provide their sidewinder shifter, which once greased up is nice and smooth. Their CS was also great as Conway broke the firs tone they shipped. the immediately sent a replacement via a different carrier and went the extra mile. I would recommend them!
I have had no shifting issue but also dont try to speed shift >6k. It is a great trans imo!
Have you considered the Richmond 5 speed overdrive? .77 OD isn't is as steep as a drop from 4th to 5th as the tko600 w/ .64, and slightly more OD than the TKO 600 w/.82.
Yes, the Richmond box itself is more expensive, but when you add up all the nickel and dime nonsense to put in a TKO, the Richmond is about the same price, and you will only have to modify your current trans mount pad.
I was all hot to trot for the tko 600, but right now Im just waiting for the right time to pull the trigger on the Richmond.
Edit... For what its worth, I found the folks at Hurst Driveline to be very helpful.
