Hi V,
Water pumps have part numbers and date codes.
The configuration of the casting changed as the years went by too.
For example: the size of the nose of the casting changed as the bearing size increased, reinforcing ribs were added, and a by-pass port 'boss' was added, and then later drilled and plugged.
It really depends how original you want to keep your engine as to if this matters.
Some folks send their pumps to someone who rebuilds them so they get their original back.
Regards,
Alan
Yes, as Alan stated original pumps have a part number and date code. If you decide to have your original GM pump rebuilt I would recommend you contact Ron Burke at "Chevy Cool" chevycool@msn.com
When my after market pump went bad on my '73 I contacted Ron to get an original rebuilt GM pump that was correct for my car. Great service and reasonable $$. Very satisfied with the pump when it arrived. I've included a photo so you see the part numbers and date code. Hope this helps.

Yes, the numbers on the left side of my pump is the part number. 330813 for my SB 350. The letter and numbers on the right is the date code: C= March, 3 =3rd, 3 = 73.
The first letter represents the month (January would be A for Ex.) Then the next two (if needed) numbers is the day, and the last number stands for the year 73 in my case.
So, C-3-3 on my pump stands for March 3, 1973.
Hope all this makes sense.
What year is your car?
Jim
All makes sense now. Mine is E23. #330818 GM 4. From as best as I can see. So non orig. However, I will still opt for rebuild. Got belts, fan, hoses and drained today. Will get pump off tomorrow and drop off mon. Maybe I can see #s better.
