I know the spline of the steering box is tapered, and essentially the pitman arm only goes on one way. I have the nut and lock washer on, and they are even with the bottom of the spline from the steering box. But this looks like a lot of space to me, but I can't get it up any higher with a 3/4" ratchet and socket. Is this far enough up the spline? I don't want this just coming off once we get on the road! TIA Andy
Hi A,
Is the plating affecting the fit a little?
It looks like the gap is ABOUT typical for the shaft.
I'd think it really depends on if enough shaft threads are showing below the washer and nut.
It appears about 2 1/2 threads typically show beyond the nut.

Alan
torque nut to 150 ft lbs. as long as you have at least 1 thread showing after tightening down you are fine. jam something between the pitman arm and frame when tightening down. if you tighten down against the steering stop you can damage the ball nut.

Thanks that is an important piece of information! Should I try using a hammer and block to get it up further or just use ratchet and socket?

Thanks for the great pics Alan. I will keep working on it!
Hi Andy, how ya doing? That is normal. Torque the nut to 95 ft lbs. or so and all is good.
Hey John! Seems we were just there! Got the 327 to my buddy in Jeff City and he is going to go through the heads and seals and do a general check up on take a few measurements and plans to polish the ports if he thinks they need them - he is super good on heads. He is as excited on going thru it as I was getting it! then he is going to bring it up and we will set it in the frame! Greetings to Sandy. We will get back that way again! Time there was too short! More to come! BTW - disappointed we didn't get any pictures while we were there! Keep in touch!
