Hi wondering if anyone may be able to offer some advice. I have a 1971 c3 with a 350/270 engine. At the moment I have a Rochester quadrajet (7044502) that I believe is off a 1974 but did work ok. I'm looking at replacing it and have come across a Rochester (17056228) from a 1976. Wondering if anyone knows if it would work on mine? I'm not that clued up on vettes but any info would be great, thanks
Some info on the carbs below, both appear to be OEM truck carbs. Are you currently having carb issues? If so, I would just get it rebuilt. You will not see any improvement by switching these two carbs if neither is set up properly for your application.
After the complete ignition system has been brought up to standards (wires, plugs, points, condenser and the distributor mechanics itself) without improvement, rebuild your carburetor. The carb you're looking at has a different style choke, that will require some engine mods, unless you swap the choke systems. Also, and more importantly, most commercially rebuilt carbs have been extensively modified (read that as butchered) by the rebuilder. You might be jumping out of the pan into the fire if you trade carbs. There are hundreds of threads about rebuilt carbs here on the Forum, do a search and read them.
If your carb needs to be rebuilt you can tackle it yourself. I am mostly an EFI guy, but did my own rebuild on my '71 quadrajet and it came out perfect. Take your time, treat the small parts carfully, and put it back the opposite way it came apart. I agree that aftermarket rebuilds seems to be more garbage than good (no first hand experience, but a lot on here complain about aftermarket rebuilds).
Hi thanks for the replys. With my current carb I recently took it apart to clean it in a rush and a small part fell on the floor and never to be found again! Will learn my lesson from that! With me not knowing what it was I think I'm going to need a replacement really. With me being in the uk these carbs seem hard to come by without spending a fortune! Think as this one I'm looking at is only a couple miles from me it may be worth the gamble and swap over the choke, followed by a rebuild taking my time as long as it is all good Thanks again
I put a 170XXXXX model carb on my car. To me this is a more desirable carb because of one key feature, the APT screw (adjustable part throttle). This really lets you tune in your cruise air fuel ratio. If you have an interest in tuning your car with a wideband O2 gauge, you can really dial this carb in for both power and efficiency.
I would call Cliff Ruggles, and ask for his recommendation on a rebuild kit. He can get you set up with smaller tap in air bleeds if needed, custom lathed rods, jets an electric choke conversion if you want and the rest of your rebuild kit.
Do a couple of searches on the APT screw and you will appreciate this model more.
