Default Is this correct?

This is the wiper switch in my 69. It looks like it is plugged in backwards to me.

Partially. I have to raise the door then the wipers work. I don't know about the washers. Just wondering if it is flipped would it partially work. I'd like to get the door to open on its own. I know it is vacuum but I figured that there is some kind of electric component in there somewhere that starts the process. My headlights work and they are vacuum. I know that they have vacuum hoses running to the switch. I don't know the method that tells the vacuum to open the door on the wipers. No vacuum going to the switch.

Hi Z,
Yes, that's the proper connection.
The short 'tab' on the switch is intended to block the long 'tab' on the connector.
Check the operation of the wiper door solenoid mounted on the back of the tachometer housing. It directs the vacuum path to the wiper door actuator when you push the wiper switch.
Regards,
Alan

Look at willcox site for testing and trouble shooting. The wiper system is tricky. Theres an actuator swtich on the fender that controls the actuator to open the wiper door. The good thing is when you open the door the wipers work. So the wiper systems electrical and interlock systems are working. So either you have no vaccum, the vacuum solenoid or the actuator are bad. Thats actually a short list.

Za-

For the wiper motor to run the door has to be open, there is a limit switch on the firewall that must be engaged for the motor to run.

As for why the door won't open... The door actuator relay has to have vacuum on the small hose side for the door to stay closed. (or you have a faulty actuator). I'd go to the relay and see if you have vacuum on that small hose. If you do, then I'd check the relay to see if it's working. If the relay is working then I'd go to the actuator and see if you have vacuum on there... If you do then test the actuator to see if it's working.

Here is a picture of how the relay works... just substitute wiper for headlight, both use the same relay.

Then use this picture to test the actuator.

Here are the vacuum diagrams for your car, both the early and late.

Wiper relay testing.
