Default Exhaust Question

1973 L48
Almost ready for the final touches after a year long refresh. Need exhaust system. Closest exhaust shop is 30 miles away.

Anyone here use the complete systems that are sold by any of the vendors such as corvette America?

I used ZIP for a complete exhaust system when they had a 10% off sale with free shipping. Good fit.

Hi h,
I have a original style welded, aluminized, exhaust system from Corvette Central.
I was surprised and pleased how well it fit and how easy it was to install.
They too have special pricing and free shipping on occasion.
Regards,
Alan

Thanks for the replies.
My car calls for a 2 inch system. Would the 2 1/2 inch L82 system fit?
Its a 4 speed if it matters.

I have used the 2 1/2" system from Corvette Central, it was a great fit and reasonably priced. Just order the one made for manual trans.

I used the same with my 69 BB. Perfect fit, looks original and a very easy install. I also used one of their kits on my wife's 78. Same thing. No surprises or modifications required on either.

Hi h,
I'm not sure that on a stock, base motor, the 2 1/2" system offers anything the 2" system doesn't.

Alan

Haven not installed yet, but I have hooker headers and the hooker 2.25 inch true dual system...VERY reasonably priced (under $200 for the exhaust pipes)...just add any muffler you like...

If you decide to go to the 2 1/2 inch make sure you have the proper hanger under the transmission for the bigger pipe. Recently someone posted the 2" hanger does not work.

I have the 2 1/2" system from Corvette Central on my '79. Great system. Fits just like stock and sounds great. You can get it with Magnaflows as well if you want a little more sound. As well, it comes with a lifetime warranty. Last time my mufflers rusted out I shipped them back and they sent me new ones.

With that said, I have had some issues with Corvette Central lately. Slow to ship. Lots of parts on backorder and not much communication to let me know when I could expect it. My last order took a month.

I installed a 2 1/2" Stainless system from Allen's back in 1991 on my '73. It fit very well with no surprises and still looks terrific today. There are some pictures of it here #14...
https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...l-exhaust.html

The 2 1/2" system is necked down just before the exhaust manifold to fit the 2" opening. If you should decide later to install headers, you'll already have a 2 1/2" pipes to connect to.

Good luck... GUSTO

Our 16842 system is 2.5" full stainless, and sounds awesome on the 5.7! You may try some of our vendors here on the forums like Maryland speed, RDP Store and PFYC for pricing!

The only issue with the Magnaflow kit is it doesn't follow the factory path.

If you have changed the rear strut bracket to correct geometry it would have to hang down too far.

Hate to ruin your ad, but I bought this system for my 77, and would not fit. The hangars at the rear bumper allow the exhaust to hang too low....they might work on pre-rubber bumper car. ALSO, count on the brake emergency cable resting hard on the X pipe, which might be okay with you, but not with me. I had to sell the system cause it would not fit.

We're sorry to hear about your experience. The 16842 catback system is designed for 68-73 corvettes. We cannot guarantee correct fitment when used on vehicles outside of the listed compatibility. Our catback system for the 77s would be #16710, which uses a much different design and hanger position. If you have any questions we can answer, please contact us by phone or PM.

Nice to get bashed for a system not used on a car it was designed for!

How does a catback system work for a 68-73 since the cats were not there till 75?
