I finally got the engine out and on the stand. I beg pleade and pray for any and all of your advice for i am a novice as far as the tear down goes. I have torn engines down before but not a vette ive torn down huge diesel engines and they are cake but this is my baby im talking about. where to start what to use what to save and what to but im not setting up a power house just want her strong and dependant. Thanks in advance :flag
Your first step is to do a tear down and inspect the parts that you have.
Depending on mileage and care, it may only "need" some parts, but to
truly renew it, you should replace most anything that wears. New heads
are always nice but not necessary. Definitely consider a new intake - like a Performer.
Actually, the tear down is the second step. First, you should go to the parts
store or book store for a small block chevy engine rebuild book. It will show
you evrything you need to do.
Well, you could take her all apart without too much trouble, as you know. Just bag and label everything. Then get the block in for clean and flux. If you just want to rebuild as is, it's easy.
But depending on desires and money ( as has already been stated) you might want a PLAN to save some parts, let others go. With a good overall PLAN, you will know what to add and to keep. New ARP fasteners. Balance rotating assembly. Go slow.
I'll be over in the morning and we can get started. 9 AM too early? :yesnod:
When I got my '72, it sat there for a month while I examined and thought about what I wanted it to be like....the body was allready painted and modded by previous owners....except the hood which I added....but the interior needed doing, and the entire car needed a good mechanical overhaul at least....and while I was in there, I upgraded everything....
so from wheels to roof, it's practically new now....6+ years later....
just drove from Jax Fl. here to Atlanta and back yesterday....worked fine...
you gotta decide what you need to do, and what you want out of the car...
as far as handling goes, get a VBP catalogue and study up on what is mostly available...good start anyway....that will take care of one hell of a lot of mods...especially in brakes and suspension area....
wheels and tires are another good spot for upgrades....
I recommend going rack and pinion steering, makes the car a dream to drive by comparision to anything else...except wheels/tires....
engine is easy, so many possibilities, from mild to wild to hi tech DPFI....
tranny is easy too....stock stick, auto....or go with various upgrade possibilities to overdrive for freeway work....assuming you think that's important....
there there are interior tricks....

Don't forget to check out the Engine Mods section of the Forum ( http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zeroforum?id=7 ). Lots of good information there also. Bring lots-o-cash with ya.
