Default oil presure gauge

Does the oil pressure gauge on a 1970 need to be grounded or have an electric source to make it work? Or is it all mechanical?

I have changed the gauge and replaced the line and still cant get a read.

Thanks

The gauge is strictly mechanical and required no ground or voltage.

Your fitting might be blocked, I'd remove the line at the block and see if something isn't blocking it.

thanks I have done that. Also hooked up a cheap gauge from autozone directly to the line and it works. is it possible that I am over tightening the fittings with the brass fitting that goes over the tube?

You don't need to tighten that type fitting any tighter than what will NOT leak. Overtightening just puts more stress into that plastic (or thin metal) tubing. I'd bet that there is a 'plug' of gunked up oil in that line which is preventing accurate readings.

Any time you mess with that feed line, there is risk of damage to it. If it's relatively new, no big deal. If it's old, it will also be hard and brittle...easy to damage. Anyway, remove the tubing and fitting from the engine block. Use compressed air to 'exercise' the gauge (don't need to remove the oil in the line) from atmospheric pressure to about 80 psi or so. Cycle the pressure applied so that it will dislodge any congealed oil in that line and start gauge function again. Then, just put it back together. Hopefully, you won't have to dig into the gauge cluster at all.

sounds like the guage itself is bad, since you verified everything up to that point. maybe an OOB defect. can you return it?
