Default Internal Gauge Housing Paint

Time to sandblast and paint.

Will just any flat color do on this side? I was thinking of Alodine just for the dull, lighter finish; and flat black on the face side.

Any thoughts?

Thank you.

Hi Steve,
I 'think' the gauge cluster body was a light blue on that side???
Regards,
Alan

I remember it being a little lighter than this.

It is, and you can't see it when it's installed. He's got way more spunk than me. I wouldn't do anything to that, just black on the other I would do if it needs it.

The lighter color that you use, the better you will be able to actually see your gauges at night. I painted mine a matte off white inside and glad that I did every night that my wife and I come home in it from a restaurant

Thanks everyone.

I'll go with a very light flat blue.

Hi L 49,
You point of white paint is well taken.
The inside of the taillight housings have a white coating on them. It's quite thick… not just a quick spray.
It seems to have a bit of a metallic look to it although it was flat. Paint of some sort.
I've always thought that that coating was to increase the effectiveness of the bulbs used at that time.
Regards,
Alan

Interesting/astute and and that makes total sense.
Regarding the instrument lights, I've always thought that Zora and his team goofed on that one key design aspect because they really are hard to see at night. My vision is good, but they are so dim. And, if you're afraid to change them from the original light blue because of being inclined toward NCRS - well, I've read the NCRS manual twice (Michigan winters are long) and this is not something they look for by any means. And, safety first, anyway. Cheers!

This color caught my eye while browsing the paint displays at the local hardware store:

Satin AQUA
Looks very close to factory color, as far as I can tell anyway.

Went to a hobby store and got a Testors bright Aqua believe it had a touch of metallic in it not sure been awhile. Dim white went to a nice light tint of blue green never cared for the dim white. Was on an abody cluster but betting they arent all that different. Pretty sure used a slightly brighter bulb also. Man wish Id have written it down sure turned out nice.

Hi Steve,
The housings were actually entirely galvanized (I think) and then the insides painted.
Here's a detail often lost……each lens had a little 'wick' wedged into a groove on it's bottom that helped evaporate moisture that gathered behind the lens.
What's odd is the position the wick seemed to be in the housing and lens varied and sometimes doesn't seem to make sense?

That color looks like a nice find and good choice to me.
Regards,
Alan

Thanks QAV.

I hate to think of all the times I've failed to do, done the same, and forgot!

Sho 'nuff Alan,

I've got the same, the cutout on the Lens and the Housing.

I had problems at night seeing my gauges.

Painted it white and that ended that problem, now they really light up nice.
