I recieved my Chrome Hokker Side mount headers today for my BB. I'm running ARP head studs and noticed the exhaust flange is hitting the studs. I removed the studs and put the original head bolts back in and it seems alright. Anyone runnings studs with the headers??
Also It came with no instructions and no hardware. What is the best appraoch to installing them.??
I also tried to slip the side pipe over the collector and it wouldn't slide on, I guess I have to open it up some? It it supposed to be this tight of a fit??
Side pipe is going to be tight, especially after chroming. You'll have to find a way to open up the sidepipe, only other option would be to thin down the flange. And I don't think you want to mess with your chromed headers.
Not sure on BB headers, but the SB headers maybe on a few bolts you could run studs. Several are to close to header tubes to work I would think.
I am using studs on my Hooker side pipes. Don't want to risk stripping out the threads in the aluminum heads. It makes it really tight getting the flange over the studs when mounting. Is this what you are talking about? As I recall, I pulled the horizontal motor mount bolt so that I could raise the engine about an inch with a floor jack from below and everything went pretty smoothly.
I'm running ARP head studs, took a die grinder, and ground the flange to clear the studs, coated the bare metal with Aluminum Blast. Also, you will have to elongate the bolt holes.
The headers out of the box won't fit, at least they did not fit for me.....spent more than 6 hrs fitting, grinding, drilling, etc., filing.
Also, very critical operation.....take a straight edge and run across the tubes, look for high spots. File the high spots....if you don't do this, you may or may not seal against the gasket,. This is tedious and time consuming, but will ensure you have a tight seal.
I removed a couple of the studs and the headers fit much better. Now for the side pipe, I'm thinking of maybe using a wedge to open it up?? Any Ideas, I don't want to mess up the chrome to bad.
I had the same problem with the stage eight locking studs. Had to die grind them some to make them fit right. Also had the problem of making the collector fit over the side pipe. Ended up opening it up a bit and then using some anti sieze to make sure I could get them apart in the future. JCL on the forum is the resident side pipe guru and is a great help. You might email him for more guidence.
