Maybe I should have worded this differently.....
I am well aware how to figure CI with bore and stroke.
What I wanted to know is .... in comparing a Dart block vs a stock SBC block (using a 3970010)....what is the upper limit of the stock block in boring and stroking?
I have 3 of these blocks (3970010) all 4 bolt mains, one fresh bored .030 and the other 2 virgin.
One is already started as a 383.
Interested in building a 406 and/or a 427.
Want to know the pros and cons of using what I have vs 2-3K on a Dart block.
Thanks for any insight from those that have experience in these actual blocks and configurations.

Your blocks are 350 blocks. They are 4" bore blocks. You usually don't want to go past .040" overbore on a 350 block. .040" over with a 3.875 stroke would get you to 397". 400's have a 4.125 bore. With a Dart 400 block you could go as big as 434 without problem, 440 if you don't mind going to it's last overbore right out of the gate.

The two red engines are 406 stokers, 4.125 x 3.80. A "zero" deck without cutting a new block.
If you have a 400ci standard bore I would and have put in a 4 inch crank and you have a 427ci small block that scares the crap out of anyone at the light, downside is no one will try their luck.
