If you look at one of the "sticky" threads at the top of this forum there is a thread on problem tumblers. Your's may be the same issue, frequently the column doesn't rotate quite far enough when the shifter is moved to let the key release.

This is the link to the sticky on the General Motors Steering Column/Transmission Shift Interlock System. The information is correct for C3 Corvettes from 1969 thru 1976.
