I have a 79 and one of the Rollers is broken off the Window Regulator arm. I ordered new Rollers from Zip (Part # ZDR-370), but I can't figure out how they go on. I am guessing by looking at them they need to be pressed in or maybe there is some kind of riviting involved. Has anyone ever replaced thses before? Any help or advice would be appreciated.
Yes, they are rivets. Not very difficult to do, but you have to make sure you support the backside of the rive on something solid or you will break the plastic wheel. I took a very short (1/4"D x 3/4"L) bolt of slightly less in diameter than the exposed portion of the back side of the rivet.
Place the head side of the bolt down on an anvil or something very solid and stable. I used the flat face of a ball peen hammer head to place on the end of the rivet to be crushed or flared; and, struck the said ball peen hammer head with another large hammer. Massive blows aren't required. Try to do this without cracking the flare side of the rivet and don't smash it too thin, just very tight. If it is loose you will have excessive window rocking in the track. I still had a few that cracked on the flare but still seem to holding well.
Thanks for the info, I was afraid I was going to hear it was a rivet. My regulator is still in the door frame, but the window is out. I can push the regulator up and the arm with the missing roller will come out of the top of the door. Do you think I am wasting my time trying to put this roller on without taking the regulator out? If I have to take the regulator out, is this some trick to that or do I have to dissemble the regulator? This is really starting to be a pain. Thanks for in advance for your help.
If the roller broke off from its mounting, or the plastic wheel broke, unfortunately you have to take the regulator out. Is the roller broken, or just off its track? The good news is that once you have the door panel off, it really isn't that bad a job.
It would help you alot if you had the assembly manual for your car, found at most good Vette Parts places.
