Need some info on what I'm up against in replacing the resistance wire on a 69 small block. Over the years the insulation has gone from the wire from starter back up to coil...is this available or any suggestions?? Thanks!

The cloth covered wire from the starter up to the coil is not a resistance wire. When the starter is engaged that wire provides direct 12 volts to the coil through the starter circuit to aid in starting so you can just replace it. It should be attached to the same clip as the resistance wire at the coil if it is still stock but only the other cloth covered wire going directly to the coil is resistance.
Hi R,
I believe on original harnesses the resistance wire was marked and was part of the same connector as the shielded/wrapped wire as CG described.
The resistance wire was printed with a DO NOT CUT warning.

Alan

On a 69 it isn't quite like Alan's pic. Both wires are "cloth "coated on a 69. One has a yellowish thread (like his pic) and one is white. They are joined at the coil just like his pic but it isn't a black wire on a 69. The coil wire from ignition is a resistance wire but the other cloth wire from the starter is not. If it is only the one from the starter you can replace it with whatever you want but the resistor wire is something you don't want to do if you want to remain stock ever again. I have a 69 L36 that I have converted to a Pertronix ignition but leave the resistor wire connected to the coil even though it is by-passed by a direct wire from the IGN port on the fuse box. I don't want to lose that wire... If it is just the starter " coil boost" wire, replace it with whatever you want as it isn't a resistor wire.

The wire from the starter up is my biggest problem...age and environment has taken a toll on it. The feed from the inside, not perfect, is better. Someone has bubba worked on it so I have some more checking to do to get it back to a more stock condition. Just didn't know what the situation with the resistance wiring was.
Hi R,
Here's that same wire at the starter.
Notice originally it had an additional protective wrap on it.
If you carefully unwrap the harness from the starter to the point that wire exits the harness at the coil connection perhaps you can replace it and save the harness.
New harness wrap that's just like the original is readily available from various venders.
Is that what you're thinking/considering?

Alan, I would re-wrap if I could get the material to do it. Didn't know the wrap material could be gotten and where to get it??
