is this a direct replacement? Besides removing the old rag joint and putting this one in do you have to collapse the column at all?

The best rag joints are the GM/Saginaw complete joints- long gone now. NOS ones are $250-$300 +. You can buy a rag joint from any vendor for under $100 they are not the same level as the GM rags were. Some are just solid rubber, others have the d-flat in the wrong position. This is for steering so I would look for the best. The u-joints will work but they do not have the d-flat and use set scews to hold them on, like the Borgenson rag. The GM clamps around the splines, in my opinion a much better method. It should be grounded through the joint as originals were, the u-joint would be common grd.

I thought Willcox was working on reproducing the rag part, to GM's spec, with fibers for strength, and conductive threads for the horn. I don't know if they sell it yet, but it might be worth calling them.

That said, I have Flaming River U-joints in both of my cars.

I asked Wilcox about that last year and he said they looked into it but determined it would not be cost effective. All the threads on here people looking for one, seems to me they could sell a bunch of them. I'm still using my original one but if a quality part became available, I would certainly replace it.

I spoke with Tom Reina about this over 10 years ago, he has been gone about 9 now I think, He made rags as good as GM did. He told me back then he couldn't get the rag material anymore and stopped making them. GM still sold rags at the time so they were still available. Almost anything can be made it just comes down to cost, the current ones are imported and cheap- you get what you pay for. Will they bolt in and work- probably. Will they provide the same road feel as the Saginaw rags or Tom Reina's - no. Several vendors were going to save the world and start making them like Tom did only to find out about the material cost, at least 3 vendors that I know of- all failed to provide an option. I repeat, the best rags are NOS ones and you will have to pay for the best. The last time I attended Carlisle was 2016 and I had a 67-e69, l69-82 and 63-66 std rags on display. I was going to keep the 63-66 as it was my last one but a guy came by said he couldn't find one anywhere and had $300 cash and needed it badly so I sold it. You can always go with the cheap one and see how it feels. If you like it you're good otherwise start looking and buy the NOS one just be sure it's correct. I see rag worse then the ones I threw out on e..y and they want over $100 for them- that's crazy.
