My 71 came with ugly, dumb-looking Supertrapp mufflers. I've bought new Magnaflow 2 1/2" mufflers & want original looking tips. But... bezels measure about 4 1/2" on top & 5" on the bottom. Every tip I look at is 6" wide. What am I missing ? HELP !
Thanks, Tim
Hi Tim,
Not sure what exhaust bezels you're looking at…. the original bezels are 7-1/2" clear side to side.
While the exhaust original tips are 5-7/8" side to side.
So about 3/4" space on each side of the tip in the bezel; and about the same at the top.
Regards,
Alan
That might explain the use of Supertrapps. Looks like my bezels have been changed. Now what do I do ? Better question is how/why did I end up with mini-bezels ? What year had them ?
Hi Tim,
There were just 2 configurations of original Corvette bezels for 68-82 cars:
The 68-69 for the round exhaust tips and the 70-73 for the rectangular exhaust tips.
What you have must be from another make/type of car or an aftermarket product.

Alan
Hi Tim,
That really looks like a stock bezel that's been carefully cut.
Even the position of the two screws on the sides looks typical!
Is there a seam?
The part of the bezel in the quarter panel looks normal, but the amount of bezel in the valance looks modified/shortened.
Regards,
Alan
Yes. It looks like it was modified to compliment the Supertrapps. Nice job, but... !! I don't see any other choice but to restore it to an original size so I can install the correct size tips. God I hate those Supertrapps. I'm embarrassed to drive it, always afraid someones going to pull along side laughing & pointing. Tim

When changed to Magnaflow mufflers I bought tips that fit the 2-1/2" pipe
Gibson made them: sport exhaust tip 500432. I see a pair on eBay for $63.76
Side inlet like the 70-72

Hi Tim,
How much work changing the valance will be will depend on how it was modified. If you're careful and lucky you might even get away doing it with out needing to paint. The lip on the bezel hides about 1/4" of a rough edge if needed.
Opening up the cut-out to the correct size will likely be pretty easy… but you really need the flange that runs up the side and across the top to secure the bezel in place properly.

Alan
Thought I would follow-up my original post. Looks like the previous owner either installed 68-69 bezels, or modified them to look like they do on this car. There have been no modifications to the valance & I can't find any fiberglass work that would have changed the opening.
So, I just bought a pair of 14" Magnaflow mufflers & original-design tips. Looks better & sounds great. Not 71-correct, but I'm happy with the results.
Thanks for all your help, Tim
