Default Need help with a Fuel Problem

Recently, my engine has been missing or surging, at virtually any rpms over 1500 . All of my ignition components are new and i am not loosing spark to ground. So, i noticed that my electric holley fuel pump (black series) was sounding different - alot quieter. So, i replaced it with another same pump and put a pressure guage right after it. The pump is supposed to deliver a psi of 14, but im only getting 6 psi discharge. At the carb, im getting 6 psi also. I also replaced the fuel regulator (bypass type) but the missing/surging still occurs.

Any thoughts ?? Could the fuel lines need blowing out ??

Thanks, RR

I just replaced the fuel pickup screen in the fuel tank on my '71. The one I took out was split in half and doing NO filtering. Could be you are in the same boat and picking up 30+ year old stuff from the bottom of the tank.

Duke,

Can you reach it via the top opening of the tank ? Isnt it sort of like a 'sock' ??

I dont think the f uel pump is sucking very hard by the sound of it....its hardly noticable like it was before.

Thanks, RR

If you have a stock tank then it's all one unit with your fuel level sender. It's mounted through the bottom of the tank. You'll have to get the spare tire carrier out of the way to see it.

I had the suction filter in the tank get sucked flat by the fuel pump, this in turn reduced the area inside the filter. Hence, not enough fuel available to supply the pump. My symptoms were- the car would idle and drive okay, if I floored it would accelerate fine until it used the gas in the carburetor and then it would fall on it's face. ( pump couldn't get the gas to supply the demand). Replaced the filter and that solved my problem.

ALways and 1970 Stingray,

Tanks (no pun intended) !!!

Did you guys replace the thing yourself ? I am almost out of gasoline now , so, maybe now is the time for me to remove it from the bottom of the tank. Did you get the filter thru GM ? What can i expect to find after the gasoline is drained out --- does it come out easy ??

Thanks, RR
