!970 454 runs good when initially running...after it warms up, it runs like its missing it backfires and breaks up under acceleration. I thought it could be carburation, any ideas??
can initial timing be performed w/o finding tdc on cylinder 1?? I basically am working on this by myself and I feel the timing is all jacked up.....there is no vacuum line run from the hei to the carb so most likely that is part of the problem....I was just gonna hook up time light and adj timing to 0 degrees....would that be right??

Setting it to 0 degrees would not be correct.
Not sure of the exact number off the top of my head, but something on the order of 34 degrees total timing is in the ball park. That is after distributor advance takes place. I am sure someone here has the exact tolerances or you can google them as well.
0 degrees would be way too retarded to operate correctly in almost any circumstance.
All of this is assuming you are running a standard distributor with a carb setup. If you have a computer setup, then follow those directions as they are likely different.
