I wasn't speed shifting; just putting through my neighborhood. This is the third time it has happened. Stock shifter will be replaced with a Hurst in the future, but I need to get this thing to the body shop for an insurance estimate. My friend climbed under there and jiggled something around before, but it was parked in a tight spot and I couldn't tell what he did. I need to learn how to fix this myself so I don't get stranded in the meantime.
the most common cause is the bolts that hold the shift levers to the shafts coming out of the side cover loosen up. You will need to place the car on jack stands, loosen the bolts holding the levers onto the shafts, place the shafts in neutral, and retighten the bolts.
Sure enough the shift lever closest to the rear of the trans(1-2?) had a loose bolt. The lever closer to the engine(3-4?)wasn't loose; when I put the wrench on it it popped right into neutral. It seems to be shifting fine now, but I babied it all the way to work and the body shop. I'm gonna get under there and check it again before the 14 mile drive home. I was thinking I should put some blue Loctite on there, but should there be some adjusting done first? I am new to stick shifts(I have owned many cars with them but never worked on them, except pulling and replacing a top loading 4 speed, no linkage, over 30 years ago), so I'm pretty much in the dark here. The videos are great, but the trans is in the car, not on the bench. I also plan to put a Hurst in there ASAP, so I don't want to dick around with this stock shifter any more than necessary.
