Default tapping sound

Hi all

This one has me thinking exhaust but I am not sure. I have a 76 C3 L48 with 24K original miles. There is a tapping sound when driving that seems to come from the passenger side, middle of the car.

There is no sound at idle and it does not increase with RPMs but does go away if you take your foot off the throttle.

All the pipes look good but I cant see the top of the cat. The exhaust system is the original.

Any suggestions on what to check?

Thanks!

I used the old trick of a shop vac in the exhaust to look for leaks.. and it all looks good. Would a fuel pump be a constant tap regardless of RPM?

fuel pump would vary with RPM, Have you checked the front U-joint on the driveshaft?

Thank You!

Wouldn't the front U Joint be one that increases and decreased with rotation?

sorry missed the "does not" increase with RPM. Have you had the car on a lift and looked for anything loose underneath? are the motor mounts and transmission mounts good?

Yes sir. All is good. It pretty soft tap which made me think exhaust. Really has me baffled. A fuel pump etc would be heard at idle or at least hi rpm in park correct? Mine is quiet when not moving.

Is there a way to post a video with sound?

If the sound is on the "tinny' side I'd guess exhaust.

However, check the emergency brake cable as it could have come loose over time and gets sloppy at speed.

Its a rhythmic sounds deeper like exhaust. In park, revving the engine produces no tapping. Only under acceleration when moving. I'll try and record it but no to sure it will be captured.

I checked the brake cable and its tight.

I tried to capture the sound but its too faint to be heard on the camera. Its only during acceleration. When I take my foot off the accelerator it stops, when I shift into Neutral whole moving and revving the engine, no tick.

Is the fan hitting the shroud because the left motor mount is bad?

Parked and in drive, power brake it, with the hood open if that's it you'll know it!
