looking at a pair of headman headers for my 78 question is: Will not fit with steering damper inside front cross member. is this some thing i need to worry about thanks
:confused: Specifications:
* Primary tube size: 1 5/8 in.
* Collector size: 3 in.
* Finish: Ceramic coated
* Not for use with smog injection or injection heads.
* Shorty-style header
* Will not fit with steering damper inside front cross member.
* Will fit with angle plug heads
nope :) I've got a set of hedmans on my 78 as does SD-Pacecar obviously both of us have steering behind the front crossmember and they both fit - the Power Steering ram (if you have it) comes within an inch of the tubes however if that bothers you.
on the drivers side it looks like this
I did have one minor clearance issue at the idler arm on the passenger side and I did have to dimple the tube for clearance around it as can be seen here.
other than that these fit terrific. Another tip (only works if you have a manual) is the header extensions from Hedman - these are s-bend pipes that mate with the header. If you cut off the collector from the header extensions (s-pipe) and add a short straight section at the header collecter - they will perfectly match the holes in the frame.
I used that space to add an h-pipe that runs under the transmission - again you only have room for this if running a stick.
I think it says will not fit non power steering cars with a steering damper
Thats a good point - I always thought the manual steering damper was more or less the same size and location as the power steering ram. Is that not the case? In truth I've never crawled under a manual steering car to look at that but it seems to me that they would use the smae mount to frame and the same center link (where the ram attaches) so unless the damper is considerably larger in diameter than the PS ram I would think it would work.
Again anyone with picts of the Damper would be very helpful right now.
The look is good with no blueing or burning off - so for that reason alone its worth it - but the price is awful high IMO -I was fortunate and got mine for a real good deal from a Forum member on E-bay.
I have hedman Headers on my 70 with power steering and there is no problem of clearance. Do not remove the steering damper though, nthey serve a good purpose. :cheers:
