Need U-Joints for 1980 half shafts. NAPA has several different one's available. Is there anyone with the correct part number for 1980 L-48 A/T? Should I replace the driveshaft one's as well?
With regards to getting the drive shaft done as well: If you are doing the work yourself, I would not recommend changing the drive shaft U-joint, you're going to be misrable just changing the half shaft U-joints. However, if you are subing out the work, and can afford the extra cost then get it done (the drive shaft). If you need any advise for changing the half shaft U-joints, drop me an email and I'll walk you thru it.
Me again. Are there any other items I should consider replacing when changing u-joints?
Yes, change the flange bolts as well. I beleive they are grade 8 bolts, can't remember the size though. It wouldn't hurt to change the u-bolts while you're at it. Don't bother counting on GM to give you the size either, just take the bolts to a hardware shop.
You probably have the 1/4" 12pt bolts that uses a 1/4" socket. They're pretty tough to find and most mail order houses will send you grade 8 6pt bolts (that use a 5/16" socket) as replacements. Unless you have a very thin wall socket, it will ride up on that 6pt head a little ('cause of the strap), which is probably why they spec'd 12pt in the first place, so you just need to be careful. Torque spec is 15 ft/lbs, but that always seemed a little weak to me.
I like NAPA SUPER STRENGTH for the half shafts part number 232. One cap in each set has provisions for a grease fitting ( supplied). You will need to get a needle attachment for your grease gun NAPA should have that also. They are the easiest joints to grease. No hassle at all.
