When I pull on the **** for the headlights, it often comes off in my hand. The plastic interior of the **** is stripped. The threads on the metal rod look fine, and the switch itself works fine.
The question is, what do I order? It looks like the rod and **** are sold as a package from ZIP on page 95 of their catalog.
How do you change out the rod? Should I just try to unscrew the new **** and put it on the old rod? Does the fact that the old **** is stripped tell me I need to lube the switch or is it just another 30 year old thing?
You need to replace the ****/shaft assembly. There is a spring loaded button on top of the switch. A bitch to reach, but it can be done. Hold the button down while pulling on the shaft. The new one just snaps back into place.
My headlight **** was missing. I JB Welded a toyota window crank **** on it, it has held up for over a year now. Maybe you could just epoxy the old one back on?
I would try the idea of an epoxy to glue the **** back onto the shaft as long as the switch is good. It is very hard to get the rod out of the switch, you really need to drop the left dash to get at it and that is a major project. If you can pack some epoxy or thick super glue into the **** and reattach it that way it is much easier. It may not work, I can't tell what condition everything is in, but that would be my first choice. Wells
I was told the same thing by a vendor, gotta pull the dash to replace the **** / rod assembly. I have the same problem, and haven't tried epoxy yet, but it's on my list of things to do.
