On my 72, 350, TH400 auto. Lately when I cruise along I get a split second hesitation, like maybe it wants to cut out. Another description it's like the downahift from 3rd to 2nd when I stomp it to pass. This started on the ride down to BG a couple of weeks ago. There's no set speed or any particular time it happens, it just does.
I checked the fuel lines and carb and all is clean. I checked the ignition system and as far as I could see, all is well.
I'm wondering, could the trans selector inside be wanting to shift on its own, but then doesn't?
It sounds like you're dealing with a momentary ignition problem. It wouldn't hurt to take a look at your connections, wires, and ensure you have a good condensor.
If you have a fault in the transmission, you can almost always replicate the conditions to cause a fault to occur over and over.
Could be misfiring spark plugs. Easy to check and cheap to replace. sometimes theyre bad even when they dont look bad. Resitance builds up in them and it causes misfiring and or crossfiring under the dist cap. They could be getting fouled as well. Electricty will always take the path of least resistance on it route to ground. The prefered destonation is the ground electrode on the plug tip. However if excesive resistance of fouling is ocuring, the charge will find and easier way. Like thru the plug wire to the side of the block for example. Then that cylinder wont fire causing the stumble. Many times you will only feel it when under load.
