Default New shifter console refit problem

Am replacing the shifter console on my 69, 4-spd. with a/c. New console does not come close to going in as did the original. There is a good one inch gap distance to the forward screw housings found along side the tunnel on both sides. Anyone ever have a similar problem? Seems to be stopped by the two bolts coming down from the bottom of the instrument cluster bezel.

Tempting at this point to cut them off, but before doing so, thought I would check in to learn if anyone had a brighter idea.

Thanks in advance.

Do you have picks?. Those posts bolt to the front of the console to hold it all together. I would take out the gauge console and fit the shifter console, the reinstall the gauge console to align it. Its only held in by one screw on top and 2 screws on either side so it moves pretty easily. That whole dash area is tied together for strength and is pretty flimsy once something is unattached.

Just a pic to show theres no other frame or structure

This is my 68 but there shouldnt be any difference as the gauge console I am using is a 69. There should be a bracket on the f transmission tunnel the shift console screws into as well. It will help line eveything up. Do you have an AIM?

Slots at the front of the console slip around the studs in the bottom of the bezel.

Thanks, Apparently I'm doing it backwards (story of my life on this car). I'll loosen the instrument bezel (goes against every bone in my body after getting it just right) and give 'er a try. Thought about doing that when I couldn't sleep last night--thought it was a nightmare. Thanks for confirming my worst fears!

Another question: At the lower part of the console shifter plate, there are two screws that are supposed to fasten the lower portion of the shifter plate to the console. The new console has openings for the screws but no speed nuts are indicated for the screws to fit into. Any suggestions?

U-nuts. The AIM shows one for each corner of the trim plate. They slip onto the console tabs.

Thanks for the tip. I'll go out and find out what a U nut is and buy two right now. Speed nuts worked fine for the top two screws but the ears on the lower portion are too wide for anything we got in town.

Most hardware stores have them in the specialty nut section.

In my 68, I had to have every nut, bolt and screw very loose from the parking brake surround all the way up to the wiper switch and after a lengthy amount of time wiggling and jiggling did I get everything to line up so I could tighten everything down resulting in acceptable appearance. Not a fun time.

"I had to have every nut, bolt and screw very loose " My experience also. It took several attempts to get the proper fit so it did not look like the usual "bubba" job on interior work. Not a fun job.
